What is a CO2 Heat Pump
Heat pumps take heat from an ambient temperature source and release it to a warmer temperature source. It uses an external source such as air, ground or water to transfer energy and a fluid called a refrigerant to facilitate the process. Carbon dioxide heat pumps work the same way, by transferring thermal energy, but they use carbon dioxide as the refrigerant fluid. These heat pumps are environmentally friendly because the carbon dioxide they use remains inside the equipment and is not released into the atmosphere. Furthermore, carbon dioxide is non-toxic and only has a much lower GWP (Global Warming Potential) than chemical alternatives.

Aspen is our hydrocarbon CO2 heat pump for small applications up to 200KW. Aspen is a more affordable low carbon solution that reduces flow temperatures but still provides superior low carbon heating service and low GWP refrigerants.

Why invest in a CO2 heat pump
When discussing heat pump efficiency, the following terms are commonly used: coefficient of performance (COP), seasonal coefficient of performance (SCOP), and seasonal coefficient of performance (SPF). The higher the number, the more efficient the heat pump, the less energy it consumes, and the more cost-effective it is to run.
Heat pump technology is mature and works well at all scales. Unfortunately, the traditional refrigerant fluids used have very high GWP (Global Warming Potential; a multiple of the impact of carbon dioxide, many exceeding 600). Regulators have banned very bad refrigerants and closed the door on others, leaving only some low GWP and "natural" refrigerants.
We are a leader in the natural refrigerant CO2 with a GWP as low as 1 possible. CO2 is also the easiest to maintain, costing the same as R32, but not as flammable or toxic.
